Napster MP3 Player Firmware Upgrade

Napster MP3 Player Firmware Version 664.601.015

This firmware upgrade resolves a known issue with audible digitized noise while navigating the MP3 player menu. Step-by-step upgrade instructions are listed below. You may wish to use your browser to print them out so that they are easier to follow.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These instructions are for Windows XP users ONLY. If you are using Windows Vista, you will not be able to perform the firmware upgrade on your device at this time. A Windows Vista version will follow shortly.

Napster MP3 Player Firmware Upgrade Instructions

  • Make sure that your player is disconnected from your PC and that the Napster application is not running. If Napster is running, please Quit Napster from the right-click menu on the Napster system tray icon (next to the clock on your task bar).

    NOTE: Performing this firmware upgrade will erase all of the content from your player.

  • Click here to download the firmware upgrade utility. When prompted to Run or Save the file, choose Save






  • When prompted for a location to save the file, choose Desktop and then click the Save button






  • Locate the Napster MP3 Player Firmware Upgrade file on your Desktop and right-click it




  • From the right-click menu, choose Extract All which will start the Compressed (zipped) Folder Extraction Wizard






  • On the first step of the Compressed Folder Extraction Wizard, click Next






  • Your desktop will be listed as the default directory. Click the Next button to continue






  • Double-click the Napster MP3 Player Firmware Upgrade folder






  • Locate the setup.exe file, and double-click it to begin the installation






  • Start of the Napster MP3 Player Firmware Upgrade installation




  • Click Next on the welcome page




  • Accept the license agreement, and click Next




  • The destination folder will be set to Program Files\Napster MP3 Player by default. Click Next




  • Leave the Program Folder on this page set to the default setting and click Next




  • Click the Install button




  • Click Finish to complete the installation wizard




  • Click the Start button on your desktop and open All Programs to find the Napster MP3 Player Firmware Download


  • NOTE: Your player should still be disconnected from your PC at this point





  • The Napster MP3 Player Firmware Upgrade will open. Place a check mark in the Format Data Area box






  • Click Yes on the Format Data Area confirmation dialogue box






  • Now connect your player to your PC. If you get the following window, simply close it






  • You will be prompted to install drivers for the firmware upgrade utility. Select Yes, this time only then click the Next button






  • Make sure that Install the software automatically option is selected, then click Next






  • Once driver installation is complete, click Finish






  • Your player will now be recognized by the firmware upgrade application. Once the Current Firmware Version field is populated, click Start and...






  • ...the firmware upgrade process will begin.






  • The firmware upgrade status will show Complete once the upgrade has finished. A window will pop up asking what you would like to do with the device - click the red X in the top right of the window to close it. You will then click Close on the firmware upgrade application.

    Disconnect your player from your PC and power it on. Once the player is turned on, press the menu (M) button and navigate to Settings>System>About to verify the firmware version. If the firmware version is 664.601.015 the firmware upgrade process is complete.

Troubleshooting

  • If your player becomes unresponsive after performing the firmware upgrade, it can be reset by pressing the left and right navigation buttons ( |<< and >>| ) at the same time. You should then be able to power on the player.


  • If you receive a boot error when trying to power on the player, you may try reloading the firmware by relaunching the firmware upgrade application and holding down the "M" button on your player while connecting it to your PC. If you continue to experience problems, please contact Napster Customer Support.
